- Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Serbia
- Germany gave Austria the 'blank check' which meant that they would give them full support for anything that they do
- Austria-Hungary attacked Serbia
- Russia, an ally of Serbia, started mobilising
- This meant that Germany was also against Russia
- Germany had the Schlieffen Plan, that mean if they wanted to attack Russia, they had to attack France first.
- When France was attacked by Germany, they declared war on them
