You seem to have things mixed up a bit. Germany seized Alsace Lorraine from France in 1871 (Franco-Prussian war) and after that, obviously, France wanted it back.

Not to mention that France also wanted to expand and therefor could benefit from the strategical piece of land.

Hope this helps. ;)

Why was Bismarcks first goal as chancellor of Germany to isolate France?

After the Franco-Prussia war of 19th July 1870 to 10th May 1871 France was defeated and her two importance provinces Alsace and Lorraine were seized from her so Bismarck wanted to isolate France so that she could not be able to wage a war against her to take back her loosed territories

When did Germany take alsace lorraine?

It was originally part of the Holy Roman Empire (most of which eventually became Germany). After the Thirty Years War (which ended in 1648), France took control of Alsace-Lorraine. After Prussia defeated France in 1871, Prussia retook it from France. This partly contributed to France's desire for revenge, often termed "revanchism". Prussia's victory in that war allowed them to create the German Empire, which was the basis of modern Germany. With Germany's defeat in World War I and the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, France retook the territory from Germany. Germany took control during their occupation of France during World War II, but France got it back afterward. France still controls it to this day.

How did France get involved in World War 1 Is it Germany's fault?

In the 1870's Russia and France made an alliance. When Gavrilo Princip shot and killed Archduke Franz Furdinan of Austria-hungry made Kaiser Wilhem II (German leader) very angry. Germany and Austria decided they needed to punish Serbia (origin of Gavrilo Princip). Russia, serbias main allie sent troops to the Russian-German border threatening to attack if they attack Serbia. Well since France had Russia's back and Russia had France's back ever since the 1870's France sent troops to there forts near the German border. Germany declares war on Serbia, Russia, and France starting WW1 or The Great War as they called it. And Germany did not start WW1 they just did the last step. The old empires of Europe were starting to tick each other off so the assasinatoin of Franz Furdinan was the last step. 2nd improved answer: The German Plan to fight the Russians & French on two fronts was for Germany to start the war against France first with a quick invasion & defeat of France. Then Germany would be free to attack Russia before they were completely mobilized. Russia was historically slow to mobilize, whereas France mobilized faster. That was the reason for the attack on France first. The real problem for Germany was that the strategy required Germany to disregard possible diplomatic efforts to avoid war, because they took time, instead forcing Germany to start the war as early as possible (August 1914). This clearly made Germany the aggressor against France and Belgium (a neutral). The invasion of Belgium brought in the British to the war. The German unrestricted submarine warfare against Britain caused the United States to enter the war against Germany in April 1917.
