Hitler bombed Britain namely to weaken the country so it could be invaded. Britain was heavily fortified, and the only way for Hitler to successfully mount an invasion was to cripple its economy and defenses. The bombing was simply softening Britain up.

also to get back at Britain for bombing him ( . Y . )

Germnay bombed cities in world war two in an attempt to invade Britain.

Hitler knew he could not carry out Operation Sealion, and attempt an amphibious invasion of Britain until he had demolished the RAF, and so instead, in the Battle of Britain, Hitler bombed airfields heavily in day time raids, then changed to night time raids on cities, to try to destroy british morale.

Another
The cities had military installations, manufacturing plants, electrical sources and water sources and transportation centers. One method of waging war is to make it difficult or impossible for the enemy to wage war. If you destroy the enemy's manufacturing plants they won't have enough armament, planes, ships, etc to use to wage war against you. That is why both countries bombed cities.

Having conquered France in 1940, Hitler turned his attention to Britain. In order to carry out his plan for an invasion he needed to establish superiority in the air. The Luftwaffe tried to destroy British air power and coastal defences, targeting airfields, ships, ports, and factories, but they were narrowly prevented by the RAF during the Battle of Britain. Because of the heavy losses that they had incurred, Hitler changed his tactics and started bombing civilians, in the hope of forcing Britain to surrender. Major cities, including of course London, were targeted.

Initially the Luftwaffe bombed shipping in the English Channel, then the radar stations on the south coast.

They then bombed RAF bases in the Southeast hoping to destroy the RAF and make it easier to invade England.

It was only when the RAF started bombing Berlin that Hitler ordered the Luftwaffe to retaliate and attack London. This saved the RAF bases from being wiped out altogether.

The Luftwaffe had previously bombed London, but only by accident.
