God chose the tribe of Levi not to have land in order to set them apart for sacred duties, specifically to serve as priests and caretakers of the tabernacle and later the temple. This separation allowed them to focus on their religious responsibilities without the distractions of land ownership.

What part of Canaan was the tribe of Levi given?

We read in Joshua 13:14, that the tribe of Levi was not given an inheritance. Originally, the tribe of Levi was sentenced to be landless for its violent behaviour (Genesis 49:5-7), but later the Levites redeemed themselves (Exodus 32:25-28) and were promised a blesssing (Deuteronomy 33:8-11). Joseph's two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh were adopted by Israel as his own and eached received a land portion and would have made it 13 tribes. But since Levi had no land portion, there were only 12 tribes per the land distribution. Yet, in each of the cities in the territiories of the tribes, the Levites had land but most importantly, they inherited the sacrifices of God - a priveledged inheritance.

Why isn't Joseph a tribe of Israel?

Joseph is not in the 12 tribes of Israel. Jacob, who is known as Israel has 12 sons...Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun,Joseph and Benjamin, Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. So logically, 12 tribes of Israel would bore these names...But no...The tribe of Levi was given/consecrated to the LORD (Num 3:11-13) and were not to be counted. The consecration of this tribe did not originate in the legislative wisdom of Moses, but in the special appointment of God, who chose them as substitutes for the first-born.Excluding Levi and including Joseph there are only 11 tribes, but because Joseph is represented by each of his two sons, (Ephraim and Manasseh), who were given the status of independent tribes, it means that there are 12 tribes. This is their formation around the Tabernacle and in order of their marches; The Eastern Tribes : Judah, Issachar and ZebulunThe Southern Tribes : Reuben, Simeon and GadThe Western Tribes : Ephraim, Manasseh and BenjaminThe Northern Tribes : Dan, Asher and Naphtali
