The Romans then developed tactics to neutralise elephants and even turn them around against their users. They were never a major factor in wars in Europe against the Romans when used by the Carthaginians and later on by the Greeks.

∙ 11y agoHannibal did not choose elephants rather than horses. In fact the cavalry was the main strength of his army. Hannibal's crushing victories were due to two man factors: his military genius and a cavalry far superior in numbers. His army was 2/3 cavalry and 1/3 infantry. The Roman army was 1/3 cavalry and 2/3 infantry. Hannibal only used elephants in the last battle at Zama in Africa. He did not use elephants in Italy because they died while he crossed the Alps to get into Italy.
Pyrrhus, the king of the Greek kingdom of Epirus, was the first one to use elephants in Italy during his attempt to take over southern Italy in the Pyrrhic war.
Elephants were used because, due to the size of these animals, an elephant charge was devastating.
