It had already effectively adopted most of the characteristics of a state during 60 years as an annexed territory. When Alaska applied for statehood, the opportunity presented itself to add both as states at the same time.

The US Navy was already leasing land at Pearl Harbor. The Hawaiian monarch's cabinets were filled with the children of missionary families from New England, many of them educated in Ivy League colleges. The sugar planters had forced King Kalakaua to sign the so-called "Bayonet Constitution", under which Hawaiians, Americans, and Europeans could vote only if they met certain literacy and property requirements (similar to the Jim Crow laws that kept former slaves from voting in the US). Asians could not vote at all under the Bayonet Constitution.

When King David Kalakaua died, his sister Liliuokalani, the wife of an American named John Dominis, was elected to the throne. She tried to replace the Bayonet Constitution with something a little more fair. This was just too much of a threat to the sugar planters of American descent. With the help of the US Marines, they removed Liluokalani from the throne and kept her a prisoner in her palace bedroom. They declared the Republic of Hawaii, in which Hawaiians could only vote if they signed a statement pledging that they would not support the restoration of Liluokalani to the throne.

The new government asked the US to annex Hawaii. However, tens of thousands of Native Hawaiians organized politically and signed petitions. A delegation traveled to "Wakinekona, DC" to deliver the petitions. The presidential administration and US Senate agreed that such an annexation would be an unequal treaty, illegal by the own laws of the US.

But then a new president was elected, and the US went to war against Spain. The US annexed Hawaii anyway, because they wanted to ensure the security of their base at Pearl Harbor as a fuel and supply station on the way to the Philippines. As a government, you can get away with things in time of war that you cannot get away with in a time of peace.

Take imprisoning people and confiscating their property because of their parents' country of origin. That is precisely what happened to Americans of Japanese Ancestry during World War II. George Takei, the actor on "Star Trek" and "Heroes", spent part of his childhood in internment camps in Arkansas and California, for example.

As a result of the Spanish American War, the US had 3 new colonies: the Philippines, Cuba, and Hawaii. By 1959, Cuba and the Philippines were independent. Hawaii was still a US Territory, and one in which Native Hawaiians had become a minority, thanks to the importation of labor from Portugal, Puerto Rico, China, Japan, the Philippines, and many other places to work on the sugar plantations. The new electorate in Hawaii voted to become the 50th state in August 1959.

IN 1993, an "Apology Resolution" passed both houses of Congress, and was signed by President William Jefferson Clinton.
