Most Germans had a hard time accepting they had been defeated in WW I. They were convinced their military efforts were compromised by "inside" traitors when the truth was they were just outgunned and out manned by superior numbers of the Allies. Looking for scapegoats to blame for losing the war, German politicians (including Hitler) determined the traitors were Jews and Communists. They purged the Communists and Jews starting in the early 1920's and all the way through WW II by combining national pride and hatred for traitors into their "final solution" efforts to eliminate Jews and Communists.
