Because the Second Republic was a threat to fascism. If Spain was ruled by a fascist dictator, the Third Reich would take advantage of Spain's strategic position.

Additionally, despite his eventual deals with the Soviet Union, Hitler did not trust the Leftists in Spain and wanted to keep Spain out of Communist hands.

1- Germany and Italy had fascist governments just like the government lead by Francisco Franco.(Fascism is a combination of socialism and nationalism, exalting the state over all else.)

2- Germany and Italy wanted to gain more land and allies and hoped to find an ally or to convince the Spanish to sit the war out. This would protect them from enemies.

3- When Germany first got involved, it was prior to the outbreak of WWII. Spain was a chance to test everything from bombing techniques (Guernica) to combined arms tactics, and to do so without having to actually go to war with anybody.

There were two major reasons that Nazi Germany took an active role in assisting the Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War. The first major reason was that the Nationalists in Spain wee trying to implement a fascist government, which would be ideologically similar to the Nazi German government (which was also fascist). The second major reason is that the Spanish Civil War would provide experience and war-training for the new Nazi German war-machine and its new military technologies. In particular, Nazi Germany took many opportunities to test its modern Luftwaffe or Air-Force by bombing key Republican strongholds like Basque town of Guernica, even where civilian casualties would be extremely high. The bombing of Guernica was immortalized in the painting of the same name by Pablo Picasso.
