The main two branches you mean is Shiat of Ali and Sunni. Sunni followers are more in Muslims and Shiat of Ali's are most of them in Iran. It have started after the ruling time Emperor Muabiah. After the golden age Muslim Khelafah, greediness and characterless kings took the ruling power. Then they have started to killed other people then their tribes. Rulers from Sons of Umaiya have killed lot people from Bani Fatemi, later on Banu Fatemi have killed lot from bani Umaiya. In this way those people who claimed as followers of Ali resided in Iran and some in Iraq claimed that those problems arose because Ali(cousin of Muhammad (peace be upon him)) did not get power in proper time. So they claimed muslims in other world then Iran and some part of Iraq were following wrong Hadiths which was described by Sunni Imam. Sunni people also claimed the same. But in fundamenal they dont have any basic difference, some people think its just political problem.

∙ 10y agoIslam has two fractions: the Sunni's & the Shiites. They have for the most part been seen as very similar however they do have different numbers of daily prayer practices.
Also for some reason, the Sunni Muslims have attained a degree of political supremacy over the Shiites.
It can be discerned that the split was due to a different view of the Koran.
