Willem Janszoon, also known as Willem Jansz, worked for one of the Dutch trading companies which preceded the Dutch East India Company. He departed on his third trip to the East Indies in December 1603, for the purpose of seeking other trade possibilities. He reached the coast of western New Guinea in November 1605, then crossed the Arafura Sea into the Gulf of Carpentaria, becoming the first recorded European to step foot on Australia's shores.
