Japan actually did not invade the United States, they attacked two territories and three states. Hawaii and Alaska were attacked, and so were Washington, Oregon and California.
The United States withheld oil from Japan due to the hostile activities that Japan was performing against China. Without Oil the War machine was not able to continue and so Japan felt that by attacking Hawaii not only would the United States back off, but the Pacific naval fleet would be destroyed and could not retaliate.
