Unlike what people see in movies or on TV, horses are generally quiet animals, rarely using their voices except when greeting other horses or their owners when it's dinner time. Union troops were very close to Booth and Gerald at one point that they could hear the jangling of the bridles on the soldier's horses. Knowing their two horses would call to union soldier's mounts and reveal their hiding place Booth order Gerald to take the horses into the swamp and shoot them.
