He turned around (twice) to see what was the matter. When he did so they theorize his foot came off of the gas. They say by doing that he inadvertently gave Lee Harvey Oswald the easiest of the three shots, the fatal shot to the head. At the hospital the driver was distraught and apologized over and over to Kennedy's wife.
