Kennedy was NOT new to foreign aggression. He was a decorated war veteran of WW2 (Commander of Patrol Torpedo Boat #109/PT-109) and had been "briefed" by the out-going President Eisenhower, himself a veteran of WW2.
The goal of the Vietnam War was to stop the spread of communism. As such, the US felt the need to stop the influence of communist North Vietnam, which entailed supporting South Vietnam in any way possible.
When the Vietnam War started, the world was in the grip of the Cold War. The United States was worried about the possible spread of Communism in Southeast Asia. We felt that we needed to act to prevent this.
Vietnam: Why we fought: to stop communist aggression (domino theory), agreed to help French fight North Vietnam because we needed help with the soviet union What we wanted: stop spread of communism in Asia and Europe What we got: nothing
We fought over the way the government in Vietnam was being run. They had communism which means if someone needed something in Vietnam like food or money, it was given to them. But we wanted them to have democracy, which means the exact opposite, if we wanted something, we would have to earn it. If we wanted $10, we would have to work to earn the money. So we fought with Vietnam just because we wanted them to have democracy. P.S. We're mean!
Involvement in South Vietnam began in 1953 under the Eisenhower administration with 900 military advisors and US Air Force pilots flying for CAT (Air America). When President Kennedy was elected in November of 1960, Ike advised him that Vietnam and Southeast Asia were the critical area and needed a high priority for military assistance.

Eisenhower's military advisors from the '50's were reporting excessive communist infiltration in the South (South Vietnam). By the time of Kennedy's administration, the communist infiltration was getting out of hand. Kennedy wanted to combat that infiltration with "Special Units"...referred to as "Special Forces", thus they were formerly established; as the Green Berets and the Navy's SEALS. Kennedy sent them to South Vietnam. The SEALS and Special Forces men (Green Berets) reported communist escalation was even worse than previously reported...and US Regular Combat troops might be needed to stem the tide (of communist forces). Then Kennedy was assassinated. Johnson took over, and the in house fighting (political) between "Special Military Forces" of the SEALS and SF (Special Forces) verses the Regular conventional military forces escalated, in which the conventional military won. Johnson, under advisement from his Generals, with his Gulf of Tonkin resolution, turned the war from (Kennedy's) "Special Anti-Guerrilla War" into a conventional military war (limited to conventional non-atomic weapons). The full military might of the United States (minus nukes) was then thrown at North Vietnam.
Because of the alliance with south Vietnam We helped them with their economy and government and with the threat of a northern invasion from northern Vietnam we intervened to stop the north from taking over the south and creating one giant country of Vietnam. Hope this helps bud.
The Cold War was pretty much the United States opposing communism, and it greatly relates to the Vietnam War because communists wanted to take over South Vietnam, and since the US had made opposing communism one of its goals the US is of couse going to help South Vietnam fight communism.
President Lyndon Johnson was a hawk, and believed that if action wasn't immediately taken, Vietnam, like much of South Asia would be taken over by the communists. While many of his advisors agreed that a more aggressive approach was needed in Vietnam, many also objected to his desire to wait until after the election to send in the troops.
