A small Union force led by a respected Army Colonel was caught up in the secession so they decided to do what they could to annoy the south. They moved to a new fort called Sumter on an island in Charleston Harbor. The southern General P.G.T. Beauregard sent to dispatch this force was an ex-student of the Colonel so he offered to let him and his men "Slip away when he wasn't looking." there is a very accurate and reliable article on Wikipedia that goes into more detail than I feel like doing now. Just know that after 2 days of intense shelling no one died.
