US President Lincoln and others, believed that secession would never come to pass. With that said, Lincoln was certain that the rebellion would quickly be ended by a show of force by the Union. He also believed that there was enough pro-Union sentiment in the South, to have the rebellion end internally.

Lincoln had no choice but to call for 30,000 volunteers to put down the Southern rebellion. This soon led up to the first major battle, the First Battle of Bull Run in July of 1861.
