Lochner v. New York, 198 US 45 (1905)
Lochner undermined the ability of states to regulate the abuses of industry, leaving workers at a disadvantage relative to their employment conditions. While the decision in Lochnerwas written to appear beneficial to the working class, ostensibly by upholding workers' "liberty interest" to freely contract with employers under the Fourteenth Amendment Due Process Clause (using the doctrine of substantive due process), in reality, the decision gave employers tacit permission to continue labor abuses.
The case set a precedent encouraging the Court to overturn minimum wage laws and class protection for women (with the exception of Louis Brandeis' victory in Muller v. Oregon,(1908)). With neither government regulation, nor substantial labor organization available to them, workers lacked the power to negotiate individual contracts. Instead of protecting individual rights, the Supreme Court legally sanctioned exploitation.
