He was pressured by his father to run for public office. After John's older brother was killed in the war, John was pressured to satisfy his father's ambitions. John had already shown an interest in government and I do not think he had to pressured too hard to get him to run for Congress. He had just recently been discharged from the navy and did not yet have a career in sights. He won a seat in Congress in his first try and moved up from that position.
