They wanted to alter/abolish them because it created a government that was too weak and pissed off the people. the problem was mostly that the gov it created was too weak. it was difficult because a certain number of delegates had to agree on the changes and that was difficult to make happen. they also weren't supposed to abolish the articles. none of the delegates had permission from their state to destroy it; that was why they closed all the doors and windows to the building they were in while they were doing this.

Inititally, before the Constitutional Convention, Roger Sherman wanted to amend the Articles and even wrote some amendments to give Congress more powers. However, upon listening to arguments made by his fellow delegates, he saw the need to abolish the Articles and write a whole new Constitution.
He found weaknesses in the Articles of Confederation and was active in trying to enhance the powers of the U.S. government.
The major problem of the government under the Articles of Confederation was that the national government was unable to enforce its laws. The Articles of Confederation were created on November 15, 1777.
