He believed Cortéz was a descendant of the alleged leader who brought his people to Mexico. Allegedly the leader left the people after bringing them to Mexico, and when he came back to them, they would not recognise him as their leader, and he left again.

Therefore the people believed that his descendants one day would come back and rule them once again.

When Cortéz and his men came with weapons, clothes and bigger ships than they had ever seen, they believed Cortéz was him.

Motecuhzoma was under the impression that Cortes could have been one of the Mayan gods. And even if Cortes was not, the Spanish had with them weapons that would very easily take the Mayan Nation.
