I will admit that there is a much similarity in doctrine between the two religions, but the reason why some members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints had multiple wives in the early years of the church was not because of any connection with Islam. I suppose the simple reason is because Joseph Smith, who is considered a prophet, received a revelation from God that some members of the church should practice polygamy. This was often times only grudgingly accepted by those called to practice it. Also, there was never a specific number placed on how many wives one might have. Most polygamists had two or three, but some had many more.
Please remember that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints no longer practices polygamy and is not connected with any polygamous groups. Any members found practicing today would be excommunicated.
