Exodus 24.18 says that Moshe was on the mountain of Horeb for 40 days and 40 nights. Then chapters 25 through 32, Adonai was giving Moshe instructions on how to build Mishkan (Tabernacle), how to make Holy garments for Aharon (Arron) and his sons and whole attire for them. How to make Altar for sacrifice and altar for incense. How to make Ark of Covenant, All the utensils for the Beit HaMikdash (Temple). How to make Holy insence, Oil for anointing. How to raise monry for all above furnishing (BTW Moshe became great fundraiser. He had to tell people not to bring any more gifts). Moshe comes down after 40 days and 40 nights to see Isralites had made golden calf Exodus 32.19. Moshe smashes the 2 tablets not in simple anger but in a legal ceremony to confirm Breach of Treaty (Covenant).

The Ten Commandments were given in a matter of minutes or more. But afterward, Moses remained on the mountain for forty days (Exodus 24:18) to receive the rest of the Torah. And still later, he went up the mountain for another forty days, twice. Once to ask for God's forgiveness for the people after they made the golden calf (Exodus ch.32), and again in order to receive the second set of Stone Tablets (Deuteronomy ch.9-10; Exodus ch.33-4).
