The Meccans wanted to kill him, and they promised a hundred camels to anyone who succeeded. They nearly caught him one night when some of them burst into his house, but he escaped out of the back window. After that he had to leave Mecca.

He was forced out or scared out of mecca because of a possible assassination threat because he was preaching against what he saw as idol worship at the kabal and maybe some other differences in what he believed was righteous. He fled to medina in the desert. (Approximately 600 CE) While in the desert he was supposedly visited by archangel Micheal who gave him the visions and assistance to create Islam. There was NO islam or muslims until mohamed started it. (The first muslim was Zayd Harithah or maybe Ali as a child around 612 CE) There were NO islamic slaves in mecca, so whoever said that really knows NOTHING about it at all!! After he gathered a following mohamed and his followers returned from Medina and sacked the city of mecca and began to spread islam through any means, even force and military invasion. (This is a very simple and short answer with little detail.) [islam means submissive]

First it was not escape. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is inspired by God and do what God commands and inspires him to do. God commanded prophet Muhammad to migrate to Yethrib (that was called later as Medina or Almadinah) to start the real spread of Islam religion and God promised prophet Muhammad that he will be back again to Mecca at some point and this what happened. The immediate reason for God command to prophet to Migrate (although no reason should be searched for any God command) is the plan of the pagans in Mecca to assassinate prophet Muhammad. In addition, prophet Muhammad migration to Medina opened the door to Muslims in Mecca; who were subject to continuing torture by the non believers; to migrate to Medina.

For many reasons; mainly:

  1. It was a direct command from God to prophet to migrate from Mecca
  2. God informed Muhammad that the Pagans in Mecca planning to assassinate him.
  3. The pagans of Mecca tortured their Muslim slaves who believed in Islam to force them to abandon their Islam faith.

Prophet Muhammad and his followers left Makkah (Mecca) per God command to them to guard their faith and to have better environment for God worship and calling for Islam (submission to God, the one and only one God).

The early followers of Islam were subject to all kinds of torture and were deprived from any human relations and treatments. So, they were allowed, for who likes, to immigrate to Ethiopia. This was the first Immigration destination. Then, the second immigration destination was to Medina for the same reason while Prophet Muhammad remained in Mecca.

Then Prophet Muhammad was informed by God (Allah) that the unbelievers in Mecca are plotting to assassinate him and he was commanded by Allah to immigrate to Medina and this was in year 622 AD.

How old was Muhammad when he was forced to flee from Mecca?

First: Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) didn't flee from Mecca. To flee means that one is afraid from something or made something wrong then he escapes the harmful consequences. This was not the case with a prophet who was hurt by unbelievers and despite that he asked God to forgive them and not to punish them. second: He was not forced because he, as a prophet, is guided by God and he follows only God commands but not forced by people. Accordingly, Prophet Muhammad was informed by Allah (God) that the Meccas unbelievers planned to assassinate him and was commanded by God to immigrate to Medina. This immigration was in year 622 AD and marks the start of the Islamic Lunar Hijra Calendar.
