∙ 8y agoThe primary reasons that Muslims built a great center of culture and learning in Iraq was the prevailing form of Islam at that time. Most of the Abbassid rulers prior to the 12th century were from a now-extinct sect of Islam call Mu'tazilites (this was a group that opposed traditional Sunni and traditional Shiite Islam). The Mu'tazilites believed that the best way to understand God, was through knowledge of the world itself, so they promoted science, math, literature, and historical investigations. When Sunni Orthodoxy recaptured power, this progress was more or less undone, since Sunni Muslims stressed piety over science.
