General Grant was attacking Vicksburg, Mississippi (the last Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River). General Lee thought that if he attacked Pennsylvania, above Washington DC, it would take soldiers from Vicksburg, and a victory near the Nation's capital city, might even lead to a Confederate victory in the war. Gettysburg was an accidental battle location. Southern soldiers entered the town on one end looking for shoes to wear, and met Union cavalry who entered the town from another end. The small band of soldiers and cavalry fought one another, were reinforced by armies on both sides, and eventually a giant battle took place over three days (July 1 - 3 1983), with a Union victory (led by General Meade), and the eventual defeat of the Confederates. Vicksburg fell to General Grant on July 4, and he took command of all the Union armies afterward.

Trying to invade Pennsylvania in July 1863 - according to Longstreet, one of the Generals blamed for the defeat at Gettysburg. Otherwise his strategies and tactics were very sound. His basic mistake was to throw in his lot with the Confederates in the first place. If he'd stayed in the U.S.Army, the war would not have lasted long.

Why did Robert E. Lee invade Pennsylvania and engage the Union army to Gettysburg?

As before, in his earlier attempt to invade the North, he had divided his army into widely-separated divisions, and then had to concentrate them in a hurry when he was wrong-footed by events. Gettysburg was where he more-or-less collided with the Army of the Potomac, though he was also motivated to plunder an industrial region where there was - among other things - a boot-and-shoe factory nearby, where the Confederates could replenish their chronic footwear shortage.
