Rome did not fear Carthage as such. The wars with the king Pyrrhus had shown then that their control of central and part of southern Italy was solid. After that war they also took over the rest of the south. Their Italic allies could supply them with plenty of soldiers.

What they were worried was that the dispute between Syracuse and the Mamertines, mercenaries who has seized the city of Messana (Messina), could give the Carthaginians a chance to expand from their settlements in western Sicily into eastern Sicily. The issue was control over Sicily, her fertile lands (and abundant grain production) and her strategic position between the eastern and western basins of the Mediterranean. Not all Romans wanted war. A peace party did not want respond to the plea for help by people who had stolen a city. Judging by how the war developed, it seems that the Romans underestimated their ability to defeat the Carthaginians. Had they known how huge cost the war turned out to be, both financial (the coffers of the state got drained) and in loss of thousand of lives, they might taken a different view.
