*Jobs was hospitalized frequently after his pancreatic cancer diagnosis in 2003, although he did not die until 8 years later, when it recurred after he received a liver transplant in 2009.

In 1985 he was fired by John Sculley (who Jobs had asked to come and work at Apple) following a power struggle between Jobs and Sculley and the other Apple directors. Jobs left Apple and set up the NeXT Computer company. In 1996 Apple purchased NeXT for $429 million which returned Jobs to Apple. In 2000 he officially got the title as CEO of Apple, he continued as CEO until the summer of 2011.

The resignation of Steve Jobs is assumed to be because of his continuing health problems. His resignation letter simply says:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
