an odd intrusion of politics into toydom, the popular (Teddy) Bear owes its name to some mildly controversial incident involving Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt on a hunting trip in, I believe Minnesota. Teddy Roosevelt, was, of course an ardent hunter and conservationist- making a big pitch for the National Parks, and somehow the toy bear was linked with our 26Th President. The rest is history. Teddy and other toy bears have been made by the Steiff concern in Germany but also many other locales. They have slumped ( hibernated?) somewhat in recent decades with competition from talking and other animal figures such as Bugs Bunny, et al. Nonetheless they still can be found.
