Texas wanted to join the United States and the citizens also wanted Texas as a new state, but President Jackson refused because Texas was a slave state. Adding a slave state would upset the fragile balance of the free and slave states. Also, Mexico didn't fully consider Texas to be independent from them and if the United States took over Mexico, then that might cause war which Jackson did not want. San Jacinto was during the Texas Revolution in 1836, a few months after the Alamo. This was the climactic battle of the war, the Texans won and were an independent nation for the next nine years. The Mexican leader Santa Anna, tried to put on the clothes of a private and get away but was betrayed by the silk underwear he had on.The battlefield is preserved not too far from Houston. There is a 500 foot tall column, a "cenotaph", with a Lone Star for Texas on the top at the battlefield, and the dreadnought-era battleship USS Texas is moored there and open to visitors. The first president Bush was a naval aviator who flew from an aircraft carrier in WWII named the USS San Jacinto. There currently is an Aegis class guided missile cruiser in the US navy also named the USS San Jacinto.
