REALLY BASIC ANSWER.

Background Texas got its independence from Mexico in 1836.

It wanted to join the Union.

Americans were divided : Southerners were happy - allowed for slavery expansion.

Northerners unhappy : Texas was large enough to be carved into 5 slave states and would give South overwhelming majority in Senate.

President Jackson shelved the issue of admitting Texas, so did his successor President Martin Van Buren.

Part of the reason for wanting an alliance was for trade - business etc.

Main reason : Wanted to provoke the US to admit it to the Union.

During the 1800s there was an uneasy peace between Britain and the US and so by allying itself to Britain it played into the US fears of British influence in America.

Texas's tactic worked and was admitted to the Union in 1845 after President Tyler annexed Texas as single state.
