Emperor Theodosius (378-395) was a Christian, like all but one of the Roman emperors since Constantine. Paganism was weakened by almost a century of persecution and could no longer resist Christian domination. Theodosius could declare the public worship of pagan gods illegal, knowing that the remaining pagans in the empire could not resist him and his Christian supporters.

∙ 13y agoEmperor Theodosius (378-395) was a Christian and extremely intolerant of any non-Christian religion. Rather than continue to allow people to follow whatever religion they chose, which had nominally been the case at least since the Edict of Toleration, he made Christianity the official religion of Rome. This had the effect of requiring all residents of the empire to become Christians and, to enforce this, he instituted further persecutions of the pagans, even making it a capital offence just to look at a pagan statue smashed by the Christian mobs.

∙ 11y agoBy the time of Theodosius, Christianity had probably spread to almost half the population of the empire, and had become a militant sect. When Theodosius made his announcements, there were plenty of Christians ready to follow their bishops in plundering and destroying the temples, attacking pagans wherever they were found, and burning books not thought to be useful to the Christian Church. The strength and militancy of the Christian Church resulted from the administration of Constantine. This in turn allowed Theodosius first to make Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire without regard to the other religions still widely practised, then to make the public worship of the pagan gods an offence punishable by death. Christianity also spread to the east of the Roman Empire (until the arrival of Islam and political changes in China and elsewhere), but developed as a tolerant religion willing to co-exist with other beliefs.
