Lincoln hand picked him much to the dismay of the Republican party. Lincoln was trying to show the country unity as it began recovering from the Civil War. Before the war the country was politically divided with Democrats heavily backed in the south while Republicans dominated the North.

President Lincoln choose Andrew Johnson as his running mate because he was more supported by the Republicans then Hannibal Hamlin from Maine. It was also due to the fact that Johnson had been appointed by Lincoln as the military governor of Tennessee. He had long been a politician there and he could help in the border States. He was less radical than Hamlin.
