Because the Mormon Pioneers were forced westward to find a place to live in peace and harmony (aka Zion) and the salt lake valley was it. Also as the Saints were moving across the U.S. Brigham Young said that they should settle in the Utah Valley even though it was mostly desert and swampland and would be hard to grow crops on. actually, it was the Mormons who allowed Utah become a state. They wanted it to be called the state of Deseret, but the government refused so they named it after the Ute Native Americans instead. Also, mormonism started in the U.S.
