The thinking of the people in the past are different from now especially in relation with the King or high ranked people. In the Kingdom, they have their own rules just like how we have laws today.

Back in those times punishment was swift, very harsh, and usually administered in public settings so that potential wrongdoers were (hopefully) scared into NOT committing offenses in order to spare themselves the Horror of the punishment that would befall them if they were caught.
