During the Mexican War of Independence (1810-1821), Santa Anna fought for the Royalist forces trying to annihilate the pro-independence, insurgent movement. During February of 1821 he was persuaded by retired colonel Jose Joaquin de Herrera (1792-1854) to switch allegiances.
