Well, his father wasn't much of a dad, and his mum died. He was on the streets at age 10, bragging about the fact that he got arrested for the 1st time (at age 10), and then he got arrested a lot after that.

He couldn't seem to find his way, and didnt like his life - he wanted to get killed which is why he pointed an unloaded gun at the police. He is tough and mean and rough, but I think he may have a good heart. He didnt want Ponyboy to become like him, and after Johnny died, he fell apart.

Dally broke laws because he grew up in a tough environment and felt like he had to act tough in order to survive. He also had a rebellious nature and didn't always see the point in following rules that he didn't agree with.
