There are many reasons for the fall of the Berlin Wall. However the main reasons were the change in leadership in East Germany about one month before the fall of the wall, and massive demonstrations drawing up to one million people to East Berlin. Eventually, the government caved under the massive pressure from the people.

They did it because they wanted to reunify Germany. By 1989, the communists in East Germany had lost the support of the Soviet Union, which they needed to stay in power. The USSR itself dissolved in 1991, a year after German reunification in 1990.

After World War II, Germany was split into four sectors-the Soviet, American, French, and English. Germany had fallen apart. The Soviets ran their sector as a communist one. The wall was built in 1961 to prevent the people in the East from escaping into the West which was better. People still tried to get over. They dug tunnels and jumped out of windows. People died trying to cross-a total of 239 deaths at the wall. There were about 5000 escapes. Ronald Reagan (US President from 1981-1989) had came over to the Brandenburg Gate to give a speech to the Soviet Leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, and the West Berliners. East Berliners heard the speech through their radioes. He wanted the wall down since their was tension between the US and USSR with the Space Race and Nuclear Weapons that had happened in the past. He wanted to be on better terms with the Soviets and realized the struggle of the people. He wanted Germany reunified. And later in 1989 things heated up. East Berliners held demonstrations against their communist government. Authorities had to handle the situation with matters of force. East Berliners were beaten and arrested that night, some even took sledgehammers and tried to break apart the wall to get into West Berlin. Finally by November 1989, after East Germans were allowed to leave through the checkpoints, they started to take the wall down. Families that were separated were reunited after not seeing each other for years. All was better but it took a while for things to be cleaned up. In 1991 the USSR fell. Also Gorbachev had made peace with Reagan and Gorbachev had won the Nobel Peace prize.

The Berlin wall represented the imprisonment of the people of East Germany. when it was built it was done to stop an ever increasing number of people leaving the communist side of occupied Germany. This had the effect of permanently breaking up family's, friendships, as well as driving home the fact that Germany was not 1 united nation. The moment the East German government lost the power to enforce the existence of the wall the people literally ripped it down reuniting Germany.

The Berlin wall being tore down symbolized that communist rule was no longer splitting Berlin. It symbolized the end of the cold war signifying that the east - Russia - and the west - America - were on speaking terms working together.

When did the Berlin wall go up and come down?

the Berlin wall was built on Sunday August 13, 1961 by the German Democratic Republic (GDR.) They built it so East Germans could not escape from the Soviet Union. The end of the Berlin Wall and the beginning of the reunification of Germany started in the summer of 1989, when Hungary decided to take down the Iron Curtain and open the borders which created an exodus of thousands of East Germans going to West Germany. It came down on the 11th and 12th of November 1989.
