The English government under George III had incurred enormous debt in fighting the French during the 7 years war. The British Parliament felt the colonies should help pay for some of these costs, through direct taxation, since the colonies benefited from "red coat" protection. Direct taxation offended the colonies because it was placed on them by Parliament without their consent. Thus the colonial battle cry: "no taxation without representation".
