Eastern Europe was ruled by large empires for a long time. The Russian Empire, German Empire, Austrian-Hungarian Empire, and Ottoman Empire ruled over most of Eastern Europe until the end of World War I (even prior to) where new Eastern European countries eventually started coming about.
