Most colonists probably left Europe for the opportunity. It was a chance to get a big piece of land for themselves, which they couldn't do in Europe where everything was overcrowded. They also believed the resources of the colonies might bring them massive wealth, and the colonies did for some settlers. There were also people, such as the Pilgrims and the Quakers, who moved to the colonies to avoid religious persecution.

Many colonists wanted to leave Europe due to religious persecution, economic opportunities, social mobility, and the desire for political freedom. They sought a chance to start anew in the New World where they could practice their religion freely and have a chance at a better life.
