What happened after Union Admiral Farragut retreated from Vicksburg?

The commander of the Confederate forces at Vicksburg was General Earl van Dorn. When Union Admiral Farragut withdrew from Vicksburg, General van Dorn decided to mount an attack on Baton Rouge and retake it. He believed that if the ironclad, the CSS Arkansas could reach Baton Rouge the Union gunboats there could be sunk or forced to retreat down river. He sent General John Breckinridge with 5,000 men to lead a land attack The Union garrison defending Baton Rouge was lead by Brigadier General Thomas Williams. He had advance information of the impending attack and on August 5, had his men lined up for battle. The Confederate forces first had met their objective of forcing the Union back to the river side. The Union gunboats, however, were still intact and gave support to the retreating Union army. The plan had called for the CSS Arkansas to eliminate the gunboats, however, the Arkansas never reached Baton Rouge as its engines had failed. It drifted and ran aground on the river bank. In the meantime the USS Essex arrived and the guns of the Arkansas could not be aimed at the Union ship. Rather then surrender the ship her captain blew up the Arkansas. Back on shore the gunboats and the Union army forced a Confederate retreat. Losses on both sides were heavy. Rather than wait for another Confederate attack, the Union garrison withdrew to New Orleans and the Confederates re-occupied Baton Rouge until December, when it was retaken by Union forces. Baton Rouge remained in Union hands until the end of the war.

Jolliet and marquette belonged to what country?

JACQUES MARQUETTE (1637-1675) LOUIS JOLLIET(sometimes spelled Joliet) (1645-1700) Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet searched together and found the waters of the Mississippi River. They were the first Europeans to follow the course of the river. Jacques Marquette (also known as Father Marquette) was a Catholic missionary and explorer. He was born in Laon, France. In 1666 came to Qubec, Canada and learned Indian languages. From 1669 to 1671 he worked in missions in Sault Sainte Marie (Michigan) and La Pointe (Wisconsin). Around this time, he first met Louis Jolliet, who was trading with Indians in the same area. Jolliet was a French-Canadian trader and explorer. Jolliet was born near Qubec City and raised in a Jesuit seminary. In 1668 he decided that he didn't want to become a priest and he became a trader with the Indians instead. From 1669 to 1671 Jolliet explored a lot of the Great Lakes region. During that time he became a great map maker, also worked as a fur trader, and met Marquette. In 1672, Jolliet was named leader of an expedition that would explore the northern part of the Mississippi River the following year. Jolliet asked Father Marquette to be the chaplain of this group. Along with five others, Jolliet and Marquette crossed Lake Michigan, and explored the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers, before reaching the Mississippi River. They followed the Mississippi southward past the mouth of the Arkansas River, then returned northward. After the expedition, Marquette stayed by Lake Michigan and Jolliet returned to Qubec. Father Marquette preached among the Illinois Indians until his death in 1675. On his way back to Qubec, when Jolliet was on Lake Michigan, his canoe turned over and all his precious maps and journals of his trips were lost, but he was able to replace most of the information from memory. Later, he explored other parts of Canada, such as Labrador and Hudson Bay. Louis Jolliet died in 1700 at the age of 55.

What did Louis Jolliet accomplish?

Louis Jolliet, the French-Canadian explorer, went through Lake Michigan to Green Bay, then followed the Fox River, through marshes, to the Wisconsin River. From the point of the later settlement of Portage, he continued exploring until he entered the Mississippi River near Prairie du Chien, meaning Jolliet was the first to explore and map the Mississippi River for Europe (obviously Native Americans had "discovered" the river previous to him). After mapping several hundred miles, Jolliet stopped within 500 miles of the Gulf of Mexico, where he turned back at the mouth of the Arkansas River. They followed the Mississippi back north and learned from local natives of the Illinois River, which was a shorter route back to the Great Lakes. He had turned back for fear of meeting other (Spanish in particular) European explorers.
