The Danish Vikings captured the area in 867 and the settlement became a fortified area. A bridge was built over the River Trent in the year 920 or thereabouts.. Nottingham is mentioned in the Doomsday Book 1086 and in the 11th Century Nottingham Castle was built. A religious house was established in the 13th Century. King Charles 1 raised his standard there at the start of the English Civil War. One of the first banks outside London was established there. With the Industrial Revolution, prosperity was founded on the Textile Industry and the area naturally expanded as more labourers were required
