∙ 12y agoThey didn't. Citizens of the United States either joined the Confederacy or stayed in the Union, it was impossible to choose both sides. Although, many families on the border states (Kentucky, Missouri, Virginia, etc.) were torn between the war. Brothers often fought each other on the battle field in the name of the Union or the Confederacy.
