Against the advice of the people around him, Carter decided to focus his speech on how bad things really were economically and with the energy crisis and how the American dream of an ever-rosier future had come to an end. His advisers had told him to make it a pep talk, full of confidence in Americans' grit and strenght to overcome any problem - basically the approach that his successor Ronald Reagan always chose to such good effect.

After first getting favorable public reaction to the honesty of his speech, Republican politicians and later most commentators started to criticize Carter for focusing on the issues instead of on the solutions and on belief in American resilience. This quickly translated into a general feeling that Carter did not 'trust' the American people and showed no leadership.
