Lincoln was against slavery and the expansion of slavery. He was the more moderate Republican voice on the subject, thereby winning him the 1860 election. Like all abolitionist, he understood that the Constitution was a flawed by allowing slave states to count every slave as 3/5ths of person. This gave southern states greater representation in the House of Representatives and the Electoral College. Southern states were merely prison camps holding over 4 million people as prisoners. There is no simple answer to the question, but most historians agree that the by freeing all people, he created more problems for the southern effort to maintain slavery and he realized that he was laying the groundwork for the 13th Amendment.
