US politicians' main objection concerned the League of Nations that was being established in the Treaty, because the League could decide on war and peace issues without Congress' prior approval. The Treaty also was seen in the US - truth be told, with good reasons - as an effort by France and Great Britain to simply revenge themselves on the Germans and rob them blind in the process. US President Wilson's much more sensible and moderate proposals had been largely put aside, which did not sit well with the American public.
The US finally entered into a separate peace agreement with Germany, signed in 1924.
