Geographic factors contributed to the growth of the southern plantation system. The South's expansive areas for farming made large-scale farming possible. Without mechanized agriculture, such large-scale farming was only possible with human labor. Paid human labor would not have been profitable. Slavery was the basis of the cotton trade - the South's dominant industry.

The North had developed the factory system, which depended on free labour. Slaves were not wanted.

Slavery was mainly expanded to the south because huge cotton and tobacco plantations were built. In the south, the soil was very good because it had literally been untouched.
