Why did so many countries turn to totalitarian dictatorships after World War 1?

Their economies were in shambles and their legislatures were fragmented, and hopelessly gridlocked over matters of policy, unable to meet the needs of the people because of internal squabbling. The Fascist Party in Italy, and the Nazis in Germany, offered quick, uncomplicated, law and order, and efficiency. In Russia, Stalin used the existing "dictatorship of the masses" to convert it into a cult of personality for himself.
