Some people hated Martin Luther King Jr. because they did not like the way he wanted equal rights.White people hated black people.White people believed that black people could not do anything, they had to be treated with no respect.
Although King's methods were effective, they were too slow as he preferred to take the non-violent approach, or following the 'white man's way. Because of this, many people took on Malcolm X's methods which dealed directly with the issue and worked faster.
Because after turning from the issues of civil rights, he turned to anti-war and economic issues which made him unpopular with many groups

MLK followed the philosophy of Gandhi and it worked. When you return hate with hate all you get is more hate and no change.
King had studied the teachings of Gandhi and Jesus. They practiced non violent change and he took this message into the civil rights battle. He was right when he said to return hate with hate doesn't solve the problem.
What MLK is saying is that hate and bitterness shouldn't be used to gain the goal of freedom. He often said that returning hate with hate solves nothing, but creates problems. King followed the teaching of Gandhi where protest doesn't have to be violent to solve problems. Nonviolent protest does more to lead to the solution of problems and to change.

Many white people did hate him, but not all of them did. White people that were afraid that their way of life was going to dramatically change, and were afraid of this change certainly hated Martin Luther king. The whites that wanted blacks to have rights certainly did not hate him.
He became famous when he delivered his famous speech, "I Have a Dream".
Martin Luther King (Jnr), originally Micheal Luther King (Jnr), didn't believe in violence and took it upon himself to end segregation in the USA. He succeeded. He believed that Violence, when used, only increased the violence. A quote from his speech shows this remarkably well; 'Violence only begets violence... Hate cannot end hate, only love can do that'
