During the 1920s and 30s, men were the "bread winners" of the household. Women working was not very common back then. When the depression hit and men got laid off from their jobs, it was very humiliating. Some men even tried to fool their neighbors to think they still had jobs. They would dress in their work clothes, take their lunch, and leave in the morning and come back in the evening at the end of their "working day." Men also felt shamed that they could not provide for their family so they left and "rode the rails" trying to find work in other towns. This was a time of no government assistance, like job training or job retraining. A man was on his own and he had been told from the time he was a small boy that his job was to provide for his wife and children.
